Founded in Rouen in 1998 and led by architect Stany Cambot, Échelle Inconnue brings together architects, researchers, artists, and residents to work on “the invisible aspects of cities and their representations”. This interview provides an opportunity to articulate and raise the issues surrounding art in public spaces from an architect’s perspective, at a time when art and culture are particularly influenced by urban planning and territorial development policies. Conducted in November 2023, when Rouen was still in the running to become European Capital of Culture 2028, the interview explored, through Stany Cambot’s career and the actions carried out by Échelle Inconnue, the themes addressed in this dossier. These include art in public spaces in the context of globalization.
