Abstract

This submission is a review of Sandhya Fuchs's Fragile Hope. Seeking Justice for Hate Crimes in India. The review argues that Fragile Hope shows the success of India’s Atrocities Act cannot be measured by legal outcomes like convictions, but by how differently positioned actors experience and mobilize it. Through ethnography, Fuchs demonstrates that while the law is shaped by structural inequalities, it nonetheless generates a fragile but meaningful sense of hope and agency among Dalit communities.
